Some comments from Mass Rifle Team Member Bob Collins:

Quantico is "the crossroads of the USMC" as well as the home of its rifle team and scout/sniper school.  We drove down on Thursday, June 26th and shot two 1,000-yard matches on Friday, shot the Virginia High Power Championship Match on Saturday and drove back on Sunday - a good weekend.

As you can see from the photos a 1,000 yards is quite a bit of distance (a mile being 1760 yards) and on June 27, 2003 it was 99 degrees as well.  I found out later that the range was nick-named "Death Valley".

We shot two matches that day - an individual followed by a team match.    Although the "official" results are not in yet, I heard that a combined Mass. Rifle / Reading Team won first place in the team event.

One may ask why drive all that way just to shoot 1,000 yards and then get up the next day and shoot again?  Three reasons:

1) Like the mountain climber said, “because it's there” - civilians no longer have "the privilege" to shoot anything over 600 yards in all of New England;

2) We got to compete side by side with a lot of great shooters from the USMC Rifle Team, Army Marksmanship Unit and other services and reserve units as well as other civilian teams;

3) It was FUN!!
