FIREARMS SAFETY COURSES Sponsored by the Massachusetts Rifle Association Dear Prospective Student: Thank you for expressing interest in the Massachusetts Rifle Association’s (MRA) Basic Firearms Safety Course. Following please find answers to some of our most frequently asked questions about the course.
A: Yes. This course complies with the M.G.L.c. 140, sec. 131P and 515 CMR 3.00 requirements for gun licensing in Massachusetts. This includes FID Cards and both Class "A" and Class "B" Licenses to Carry.
A: The Course takes one Saturday and one evening and consists of classroom and range instruction as well as a presentation on the firearms laws of Massachusetts. The Saturday portion starts promptly at 8:00 AM (plan on arriving at 7:30 AM that day) with classroom instruction until lunchtime. Following the lunch break there will be a series of live fire exercises and instruction from approximately 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM. The evening legal presentation is generally held on a Friday evening thereafter and lasts approximately two hours.
A: The cost is $75.00 for members of the Massachusetts Rifle Association (MRA) and $100.00 for non-members. If a non-member decides to join the club within 30 days after successfully completing his/her class then the MRA will deduct the $25.00 difference from any applicable initiation fees. All students must complete an MRA Safety Course Application and pay the appropriate fee (cash or check) before the day of their class.
A: The Massachusetts Rifle Association is dedicated to promote "the proper, safe, efficient and skillful handling of firearms". While all of our instructors are certified by both the NRA and Massachusetts State Police and are experienced marksmen, all of the time that is put into these classes by both the instructors and shooting coaches is done on a voluntary basis. This allows the MRA to provide the highest quality safety instruction at an affordable price. Q: Is the course open to beginners only or do I need prior experience with firearms? A: The course is open to students of all levels of experience from those who have never picked up a firearm before and are looking to try something new and different, to those who would like to take a refresher course in firearms safety and those more experienced shooters who need the course for various licensing or professional purposes. |

A: You may bring your lunch (or plan on dinning at one of several local restaurants). All study materials, ammunition and the use of hearing protection, eye protection and, of course, firearms will be supplied to you at no extra charge. The NRA Basic Pistol Safety Handbook will be supplied at no additional cost and is yours to keep (unlike some courses). You may, if you choose, bring extra paper and a pen to take additional notes. Q: How large are your classes? A: In order to provide optimal balance in student to instructor and coach ratio, the MRA limits class size to 10 students. At times when the demand has increased to accommodate families, groups or to meet the general demand for more safety classes the MRA has opted to put on additional classes rather than increase class size. If you wish to take the class together with friends and/or members of your family it is recommended that you submit your applications together and confirm that you will all be in the same class as classes are generally filled on a first come, first served basis. Q: What topics are covered in this class? A: Students are taught how to store, handle and shoot firearms safely. As part of this course you will learn:
Q: What type of firearms will be used in the range portion of the class? A: You will be taught the differences between revolvers and semi-automatic pistols and their safe handling and will have the opportunity to fire approximately 100 rounds of ammunition using a .22 caliber revolver, a .38 special/.357 magnum revolver and a 9 millimeter semi-automatic pistol.
