THE LEGEND OF F.J. RABBETH

"On January 1, 1887 in a 200 yard rest match at Walnut Hill, Mr. Rabbeth placed 38 consecutive bullets in the 10-ring Standard American Target, then a puff of wind put the 39th bullet an inch out in the 9-ring, but the 40thy shot was back in the 10 ring.  This was a feat never before equaled with a match rifle under the rules of the National Rifle Association: the score was 399 out of a possible 400
"In long range shooting with the Sharps-Borchardt 45-70 military rifle, Mr Rabbeth uses the so-called 'Texas Grip' position, in which the strap is loosened, the left leg slipped through the strap until it binds the leg just back of the knee as the rifleman  lies on his back with the right leg resting under the left one.  The butt of the rifle is brought back under the head, and the left arm grasps the upper part of the stock just ahead of the butt-plate.  This enables the shooter to support his head and neck on his left arm, the sling takes all the recoil in firing, and after becoming accustomed to this position the rifleman can hold almost as steadily when shooting from a rest
