Palmyra 2008
Juniors from Mass Rifle’s advanced competition team just
arrived back from Pennsylvania after two days of competitive
shooting. They participated in the 9th annual Palmyra
Invitational that is held at the Palmyra Sportsmen’s Club in
Palmyra Pennsylvania. This year there were over 360 competitors.
Competitors comprised of collegiate teams like Ohio State, Army,
Akron and Alaska along with adults and juniors who have traveled
several hundreds of miles to shoot in this shoulder to shoulder
in both .22 and air rifle matches. Competitors could shoot one
or both and they could shoot individually or also as part of a 4
person team. The match categories are broken down quite
extensively to give all a competitive edge, from beginner to
master.
Each day of the match 10 to 12 volunteers man the ranges,
kitchen, scoring and registration. The match is kept on time and
competitors flowing up and down to either the air range down
stairs or upstairs to the small-bore range. In between the
matches competitors and their entourage can sit down and relax
with a chili dog or a homemade meatball sandwich or one of their
other tempting entrees. If you did not want to eat you could
browse thru the items displayed by "Center Shot" and
"Ernest Shooting Products". Conversation of course was
always plentiful and interesting and if you wanted to sit back
and take a rest, you could watch the revolving display of photos
that the match director Erin Gestl had taken of each shooter
displayed on the wall in the waiting area for all to see.
Some members of the advanced team competed in this match last
year for their fist time. This year with one year under their
belt and knowledge of what to expect, we saw radical increases
in some of their scores from last year to his year. One of the
members increased their scores in both air and .22 by 120
points. Others increased by at 40 points and had new personal
bests in both disciplines. They had a great showing as
individuals and as a team. We are looking forward to next years
competition with increases like this in one year just think what
they are capable of with two or three years under their belts.
The juniors and I could not have accomplished any of this
without the support of the club president, the board and of
course the members who are always so helpful when we practice at
the club. Thank you for your support.

Junior Olympics 2008
Reading Rifle and Revolver was the host club for the 2008
Junior Olympics. There were two full lines of competitors in
both the air rifle and small-bore matches. This year we had
three competitors join us from Connecticut who were competing
for an automatic invite score, not in-state qualification.
The Junior Olympics are divided into both men and women’s
divisions. They both compete in both small-bore and air rifle.
The only difference is in the air rifle the men shoot 60 shots
and the women shoot only 40 for the match.
In the Men’s Small-bore and air competitions Jim Clark of
MRA /Reading Rifle took the Gold Medal in both air rifle (566)
and small-bore (570). Jim was home for the holiday break from
Ohio State, where is a top member of the collegiate rifle team.
The Silver Medal in small-bore went to Alex Zadrozny of and
Silver medal in air rifle went to Robert Mangaudis of MRA/Reading
Rifle. The Bronze went to max Snyderman in both air rifle and
small-bore.
Kim Coffey of in her first JORC competition took the Gold
medal in both small-bore (536) and air rifle (346). Rena Goodwin
of MRA/Reading took the Silver medals in both small-bore and air
rifle. Jess Liston of received the Bronze medal in small-bore
and Selina Clancy of MRA/Reading took the Bronze medal in air
rifle.
The team competition was tough with 7 teams entered in both
events. The winning team plaque for Small-bore went to The Mass
State Team Gold, team members: Max Snyderman, Kim Coffey and
Alex Zadrozny. The air rifle plague went to the winning team of
MRA/RR 1, team members: Rena Goodwin, Robert Mangaudis and Jeff
Morin.
The Team Plaques and state plaques and medals were donated by
Woburn Sportsmen Association. Thank you to Mr. Dick Dyer of
Woburn sportsmen for his continued support of this event.
The JORC was a great success and ran smoothly thanks to all
our great volunteers in the scoring room and our fine line
officers. We also wish to thank Reading Rifle and Revolver and
its members for letting us tie up the range all day.

Massachusetts Rifle Association
Junior Marksmen Continue on:
Massachusetts Rifle Association is the oldest
Active Shooting Club in the United States, located off of Salem
Street in Woburn. Mass Rifle has one of the best junior programs
for competitive shooting in the area. The juniors starting at
age 12 learn the importance of safety and the proper handling of
firearms. They are also given the opportunity to fine tune their
skills and compete as a part of the Mass Rifle Junior Team and
also as part of the Massachusetts State team. They travel to
National competitions in Georgia, Ohio, Kentucky, North
Carolina, Pennsylvania and several other States each year. The
juniors also train to compete in the junior Olympics tryouts
that are held in each state every year. The finalists then move
on to compete with the top shooters from each state. The finals
are held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.
Competitions such as these enable juniors to become members of
the Olympic development team and then the Olympic team. Shooting
programs also give juniors the opportunity to be recruited by
collegiate shooting teams across the country and military
marksmanship units.
This year Mass Rifle is proud to announce that
two of their juniors will be graduating from Woburn Memorial
High School and their junior program and continuing with their
marksmanship skills. Both will leave a legacy of competitions
that they have medaled in both individual and team. Such
prestigious matches as: The junior Olympics, National Guard air
rifle finals, USA Shooting national matches along with numerous
State and Local competitions. Along with National recognition at
the National matches at Camp Perry, Ohio 2005, and 2006.
James Clark – Ohio State University
Jim Clark son of Peg and Bob Clark of Woburn
will be attending Ohio State University, the home of the
division 1 champions this fall. Jim has been accepted into their
honors engineering program. He has also been recruited to be a
member of their NCAA medal winning team. Jim will be receiving a
scholarship from Ohio State for both his marksmanship
capabilities and his academic performance.
Kevin Trickett – US Army Marksmanship Unit
Kevin Trickett son of Maureen and Charlie
Trickett of Woburn will be leaving in September for basic
training at Fort Benning GA. Kevin has been recruited to the
Army Marksmanship Team after basic training. The United States
Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) was established 1 March 1956 at
the direction of President Dwight D. Eisenhower to raise the
standards of marksmanship throughout the U.S. Army. The three
missions of the unit are to compete and win in Interservice,
national, international and Olympic Competitions, promote the
Army, and enhance combat readiness.
Since 1956, members of the USAMU have gained
worldwide respect by winning hundreds of individual and team
national titles, more than 40 World Championships, and 21
Olympic medals.
Both Jim and Kevin will be missed at Mass
Rifle, but we know they will both be great assets to their new
teams.
